YES! Xbox One *FINALLY* has a BBC America app which means I can stream the new Doctor Who!!!

I am so excited for the new series, the new Doctor, new showrunner!!

I *tested* the app tonight and finally watched Twice Upon a Time so I could see Capaldi's farewell and Whitaker's first appearance. Yeah, I got spoiled for the seasons I have not watched but, whatever, I can always watch them on Amazon later.

I also broke out my Doctor Who coloring book for a bit of relaxing coloring while I watched.

Feels good to be excited about Doctor Who again. <3

Finally watched Kill the Moon and...I dunno, I think I might be done with Doctor Who. It wasn't a bad episode, but it felt like ground we had already covered multiple times with 10 and 11. I have the next episode ready to watch but I'm just sorta..meh about it.

On the other hand, I did keep going with SHIELD (had it on in the background while running around in Final Fantasy) and I feel like it's setting up some interesting plot lines.

OAUT is still just a show. Not compelling enough for me to get excited about but it makes for good breakfast watching.

And coming completely out of left field, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles SHOCKED me with a twist ending. I was not expecting so many feels from a Nickelodeon cartoon!

...er, I guess Korra is back too? Haven't watched any of the new episodes yet. Whoops.

Was very disappointed with Doctor Who last night. I really wanted a good, creepy episode. Instead it felt like they started out with one idea, then got distracted by another idea. I wanted another adventure of the week episode, not an episode that messed with the Doctor Who mythos.

Also, why is Moffatt determined to make us not like Clara? They keep making her say the most awful things to Danny, things that are not even remotely funny or forgivable. That line from last night's episode? He had every right to be furious with her. I was furious with the writers as soon as she mumbled it. Who would even SAY something like that?? And why was SHE angry?!?

Blah. I really like Capaldi as The Doctor. I like the current set-up that Clara isn't just floating around with him all the time, but that he comes and gets her when he is in need ("How long have you been traveling alone?"). And for awhile I appreciated that it appeared she was going to get a life outside of the Doctor and that the time traveling was not going to devour her entire existence as it has with so many other Companions.

So, I haven't had a chance to type up anything Doctor Who related yet since Capaldi joined the team...so I think it's about time I did a quick run down of thoughts and feels etc.

Deep Breath was a decent enough introduction. I felt it took far too long to get started. Of course, they wanted to start off the new series with bang, but a dinosaur? Random. I, of course, appreciated it later when The Doctor echoed the T-Rex's plea near the end. Oh I feel like Vastra is starting to get over-used, though I did enjoy the banter. (though did they say "we're married" like a 100 times in that episode? I think we knew they were married from before...and it just kept coming up again and again...it was distracting to me.)
ANYWAY once the main story got going (about the time they met up at the restaurant) I was having fun. I do like the clues and hints that are being laid out for us for the season. The theme of The Doctor being angry and struggling with it, wanting to know whose face he has. Why he is Scottish? The BIG questions.

Sadly, I wasn't as thrilled with Into the Dalek but I'm also not a fan of Daleks in general. I know they are near and dear to Classic Who fans but I'm just never satisfied with their episodes. Again, some definite hints and groundwork laid for later on in the season, (is it still foreshadowing if you can see it coming?). And all the strange "soldier" talk was just...it never really felt right with the rest of the script, I can't remember the Doctor ever being so HOSTILE. When he met up with the monks during the weeping angels episodes in Series 5, he wasn't cruel to them. I know he's supposed to be angry this season but it felt out of character. I'm just going to pretend most of that episode never happened.

Tonight's episode, Robots of Sherwood was just stupid fun. Like Clara, I have a soft spot for Robin Hood. Always have. And I liked his sparring with The Doctor, who The Doctor clearly felt threatened by being proven wrong (yet again) and Clara pretty much saving the day at the end. It was just nice to have a light episode with lots of laughs.

And I loved that final moment between The Doctor and Robin, especially the one line, which I immediately wrote down in my book of quotes:

History is a burden. Stories can make us fly.

To sum up: trying to stay positive, feeling better after this last episode, guess I'll keep watching.

Okay, I tried, I swear I tried to go back and read through my flist for the past two weeks to catch up on things but OMG it's taking forever and I will never get any sleep or do anything else this weekend if I keep going. So, please, if I missed anything earth-shattering (like your reaction to the Doctor Who premiere) please link in the comments!

We watched the Doctor Who premiere tonight. Non-spoilery thoughts is that it took TOO LONG to get going! But once it go to a certain point I was relatively happy with it. Not thrilled, but feeling positive about where it might lead? Just happy I can safely go on Tumblr again...until tomorrow that is.

Going to do my San Fran recap post very soon. You are not required to read it, as it will probably wrong on the TL;DR side, but I do promise to include pretty pictures so you can skim it for those haha.

Guess who this person was tweeting about.

To make it more hilarious, our head of social media was tweeting back at this patron the whole time, unaware that I was sitting NEXT TO HER wearing said skirt.

Heads up, fans of free things!!!

Doctor Who - Fires of Pompeii is free on iTunes right now!

Veronica Mars - Pilot episode is free on iTunes right now!

Even though I haven't played an MMORPG in AGES, Tim sent me the link to sign up for the Beta for Everquest Next which I am intrigued by.

We just played Warframe on Steam for our game night tonight. It was actually pretty fun, though I sorta wish we had read the descriptions of the suits before just randomly choosing - apparently the suit I picked it the hardest one to master. (But it was called LOKI!)

Last week we finished off Alien Swarm, another freebie on Steam.

Speaking of freebies, I'm going to go play some Assassin's Creed II now - can't believe Xbox gave this away for free last month! (actually...I sorta can because now I'm tempted to spend the money on buying the sequels...d'oh!)

I blame [livejournal.com profile] sabrinanymph for reminding me I even had these action figures anymore. They were in a box of X-Files stuff, banished to the back of my closet. But if you want to get a buzz from "likes" on Instagram or "reblogs" on Tumblr, you could do worse than Mulder and Scully...

@sabrinanymph look who I found! #xfiles #actionfigures #Scully #Mulder You know you'd watch this #doctorwho #xfiles #actionfigures #crossover This show, on the other hand, would have more of a niche audience. #xfiles #mlp #brony #crossover

So spent a good portion of the evening catching up on Doctor Who.

Clara has definitely grown on me but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what her twist will be. I do like her though, her spunkiness and ability to overcome her fears to try something new with the Doctor.

But, as [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat pointed out, this season has had a lot of little plot holes in each episode. We were debating whether this was just lazy writing or if it would all come together somehow near the end ala Series 5 finale. Or if last season was such a mess that we ddin't notice the little plot holes because so much of 7 was just big pile of WTF. Most of the issues were little ones, more to do with mood than story, but it was still bothersome and pulled us out of the story a bit. A few too many **waves had to brush away minor plot hole** moments.

Still need to see the episode that aired tonight, which I think was penned by Neil Gaiman? Yes? And then next week is the finale! YEESH! Silly short British seasons!

Still...nothing has drawn me in the way that Series 5 did. Still the best of the Matt Smith seasons so far.

Thoughts I jotted down while watching DWS6E05:The Rebel Flesh

spoilers DUH! )

Just realized I have typing this up before typing up my Doctor's Wife thoughts...I liked that episode a lot more and want to watch it again. This one is sort of "meh" for me. Feel bad for the writer -- who wants to follow Neil Gaiman's episode??? NOT ME!
orangerful: (doctor who pointing // orangerful)

AAAAAAAAAH SO READY FOR THIS SHOW TO BE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
orangerful: (clark to superman // orangerful)
So, I'm sure this has been pointed out elsewhere but I'm going to type it here and pretend it's an original thought:

Anyone ever notice how much Superman and Doctor Who have in common?

Both alien.
Both the last of their kind.
Both hide their true name.
Both have an love and respect for humanity.
Both only help humanity when it can't help itself.
Neither of them wants to hurt or kill anyone (especially humans).

And [livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton pointed out that both have fascinations with small booth-shaped boxes (phone booth and police call box).

I was reading the new take on Superman "Earth One" last night and I've been watching Series 4 of Doctor Who, with Doctor and Donna. Most recently I watched "The Doctor's Daughter" and "Midnight" (which, oddly enough, guest starred both King Arthur [from Excalibur] and Merlin [from TV series] - but I digress) and both of these episodes had The Doctor trying to get the humans around him to find peaceful ways to end conflicts. In the "Doctor's Daughter" he gives that little speech at the end about how they should found their civilization around the fact that he wouldn't shoot King Arthur the General. And it seemed like the sort of position Superman would find himself in - with an easy chance to take revenge on someone who hurt him, and he would show mercy instead.

thoughts? Is Doctor Who Britain's response to the American Superman myth? Does The Doctor represent the same things to British viewers as Superman does to American? My Superman knowledge only comes from a smattering of comic books and the movies (and a little bit of Smallville but I take that with a grain of salty Tom Welling goodness).

[livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton suggested I turn this into a book, so if anyone knows a publisher willing to pay me to sit around and read Superman comics and watch Doctor Who all day, please leave the contact information here! LOL!

Okay, maybe I should just Google it and see if someone has already written an entire novel on this subject.

Sorry, that's the new lenticular DVD cover that was just posted on [livejournal.com profile] doctoreleven...I find the graphic mesmerizing...someone should photoshop a pocketwach into Matt's hand so he can hypnotize us all (oh wait...I think he just did...must pre-order season 5...)

Actually, this is the UK cover, no idea if the US cover will be the same. Probably not. We're not hardcore like that.

[livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly & I just watched 3x02 Smith & Jones, which had the introduction of Martha as the companion. So far, I like her. She's pretty self sufficient, managed to keep her head in a crisis, and didn't take The Doctor's word immediatly. We'll see how she does not that she's on the TARDIS but I have faith.

I need to go back and watch Season 1 so I can see 9. I didn't really care for the second episode with the bit of skin woman but I think I might just skip to 1x03 and go from there, get a taste of Rose's character early on. Because I wasn't too keen on her by the end of season 2. She was very clingy and all ILU DOCTAH! and while that is to be expected when you risk life and limb traveling with a person, I just felt by the end of the season she was mostly waiting around for the Doctor to do something...anything...and spent a lot of time shouting "DOCTAH!" into rooms, doors, radios, and large holes in the ground. But she did sacrifice herself...even if it was by accident.

Eleven and Amy are still my favorite. But I'm enjoying Tenant. Though when he snarls, it really creeps me out. He's got crazy teeth, sorta looks like a rat when he pulls his lips back over them...but when he's grinning, he's pretty adorable with that wacky hair.

I probably could say more but, it's midnight, time for me to hit the hay...or the mattress...probably at least one cat, by mistake of course.

Doctor Who

orangerful: (doctor who pointing // orangerful)
So, I am all caught up on the fifth "season" of Doctor Who. A reminder, this is my first Doctor. I was walking around Shore Leave and looking at Doctor Who stuff and if he didn't have on a bowtie I would say "no, that's not MY Doctor". I'm seriously in love with both The Doctor and Amy Pond...and I guess even Rory (he's like a poor man's Alan Tudyk).

I really loved the entire season. Even with all the other TV I have waiting for me on the DVR, I'm tempted to just rewatch Doctor Who and relive the magic. I loved the first meeting of The Doctor and Amy. I thought the Angels were some of the creepiest creatures to come along in awhile. I cried at the end of Vincent & The Doctor. And the finale? Whoa. I loved the entire season.

I feel a livejournal layout change coming on...yes...I feel it might be time to let Kahlan take a break and bring on The Doctor. Heck, I've already changed the background on my desktop to the official Doctor Who wallpaper.

that's all really, too late for any deep thoughts on the subject, I just wanted to say something. I can't believe we have to wait until Christmas for a new episode!!!! But I guess quality of quantity is the name of the game.

Why has no one made a "Raggedy Doctor" doll??? I mean, seriously, it would be the easiest thing to market....I'm just sayin', if I had any sewing skillz, I would be all over that!
