My Star Wars club had their meeting on Sunday! It was a great turnout, a post Celebration run down. I haven't been to a Star Wars Celebration since CIII and I'm fine with that - I prefer my conventions to be multi-fandom where possible because I love too many things. But I did enjoy listening to everyone talk about their weekend. It's a great group of nerds and we have fun.

Couple of highlights - I picked up this little lady for $1

I am calling myself an Expanse Evangelist now. Every time someone starts to talk to me about tv shows, I immediately bring it up. One of my Star Wars buddies was chatting with me about Firefly, which I was also praising like crazy back in the day, telling everyone to go see 'Serenity' and he did and he loved it and now he was the one telling me that there were Firefly books out. So of course I had to ask if he had watched Expanse LOL. I really feel like it is a perfect fit for Firefly fans.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend!

Sidenote: I realized that I never posted about my PAX East adventures!!! I will do something soon because I had a lot of fun and there were a bunch of game I think many of you would enjoy!

But now, TO BED! Because Monday was a Monday. Why did I schedule a program the first day of the week????
orangerful: (force awakens)
Two Sundays ago I went to my Star Wars Club meeting and some of the guys were acting a little off and I was wondering what happened, but figured it was something I missed because a lot of the group discussion has moved from the club forums to facebook and I'm not on facebook anymore. Well, I had missed something - one of our long time members, a really nice guy and someone who had worked with the library for my programs, passed away that very morning. Or, as Pat put it, one of our own became one with the Force. It was quite a shock. We weren't super close, but I had known him for over ten years and had seen him at the club meetings and Star Wars events at the library. But he had been dealing with cancer his whole life and apparently it came back with a vengeance a few months ago. He was a very private guy when it came to his illness so only a few people in the club knew.

So that was a really sad meeting. Instead of talking Star Wars, we all went around and talked about Bob and our memories of him, which was so cathartic. His R2-D2 is the one that danced with the Obamas, he was so proud of that. I ended up crying because how could I not? Bob was the first member of the club I met and anytime he saw me he would say "SAAAAAAAM!" and come over to chat. He brought R2-D2 to several library events and we would always chat about his next droid project. His Luke Skywalker collection was EPIC! Pat came came up to me after the meeting and said he was sorry he made me cry and I said it wasn't him, it was the universe.

The library sent flowers. I went to the viewing later in the week and I was holding it together until I saw R2 and BB8 sitting up front by all the flowers, then I started to tear up (and then I felt bad because I made his wife cry). I thanked his wife for letting him spend so much time with the Star Wars club and going to events. Only 49 years old, just so sad, but he lived a very full life and I overheard his wife saying his son wanted to learn how to work R2 (though his son is still in high school...I can't even imagine).

Bob's obituary said that people could send flowers OR take a child to a Star Wars movie.

So, where ever you are now Bob, thank you for booking a Star Wars club meeting at the library so many years ago and telling me that I was invited to come down after my shift ended. I'm a better person for knowing you because you helped me find all my people.

May the Force be with you.

What a week, talk about hitting the ground running! I'm sorry I haven't been commenting much, but I pretty much overbooked myself this week when it came to work and I have been exhausted in the evenings.

That and I'm addicted to Stardew Valley so I've been unwinding by playing that in the evenings before dinner.

BUT I did manage to pick up some Star Wars TFA figures, finally!

Finally found Rey (and couldn't resist grabbing Han and Finn) #starwars #toys #collection

Usually, I am an opener, but I really love the box art for the Rey figure and I haven't been able to bring myself to free her from the packaging. (this is probably my Daisy Ridley girl!crush talking, you can't see it in the picture, but she's in her final movie moments outfit and looking badass. The face sculpt is actually *really good* for a kid's toy too!)

I got my copy of the TFA blu-ray on Tuesday from Amazon. I opted to just keep it easy and pre-ordered from Amazon rather than messing with Target's "exclusives". From my club members, I have heard the packaging left something to be desired and since the extras are just streaming on Disney Movies Anywhere, I'm wondering how long until they just let anyone buy them.

And then the Rogue One trailer dropped yesterday and WOW. I really hadn't been paying much attention to this movie. I was worried that Disney was going to kill my love of the franchise by cranking out movies too quickly, flooding the market like they did with the Marvel stuff. But the trailer just blew me away and now I'm really curious about it!

And now [livejournal.com profile] jediknightmuse alerted me to the Build-A-Bear Wicket exclusive so I may need to find the closest store and make a trip in the next few weeks.

LOL when I started this point there was going to be some substance but...yeah, my brain is tired and everything is STAR WARS and that's pretty great. :)

(I also impulse purchased The Fugitive with Harrison Ford because when we drove through Chicago, I was talking to Tim about the scene where the cops hear the train on the phone and know he is in Chicago and that's all I know about Chicago and then it was $7 so WHY NOT!)

(oh and I also kinda sorta pre-ordered X-Men: First Class so I can have all the X-Men movies. X-Men, X2, First Class and Days of Future Past. THAT IS ALL THERE IS! Until Apocalypse comes out...which better not suck, these last two were so good)

(Clearly I should delete the Amazon app from my phone...all of these orders were made during the drive back from Wisconsin)

(I'm just abusing parenthesis now...I need to get to bed because I'm visiting a school tomorrow morning for a parent brunch to tell them about all the awesome the library has to offer)

(goodnight)

And after two long-winded wordy, deep thought posts, I give you...the typos that left us giggling way too long at the Star Wars Club meeting today:

And now I'm going to bed because I sat in horrible traffic on 495 for 2 HOURS trying to get home from the meeting (it was in Virginia) and the sun burnt my arm and melted my brain.

Goodnight!

It's gonna be a geeky week coming up, I can FEEL IT!

First - Beatles Rock Band announced today that the rest of the songs from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band will be available to download on Tuesday!

Second - Xbox sent me an email saying that the big update will happen on Tuesday, which will give Gold members access to Facebook, Twitter, and Last.Fm via Xbox Live. Yes, I may have to go gold next week.

Third - Joe gave me back Bioshock this week. He said it was making him too tense. Which means I can start my replay on hard-mode. OH YEAH! Splicers BEWARE!

Fourth - DCSWCC meets tomorrow and it's the annual customization meeting! We're making custom cardbacks or something...I will document with my camera. Plus, this is my first meeting since Dragon*Con so I will bring my photos along with me to show off how awesome me and [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly are. :D

Fifth - FIVE! FIVE TALKING POINTS! AH-HA-HA-HA!

OH, and to top it all off, Edward James Olmos AND Katee Sackhoff are going to be at Shore Leave in July!!!!! I am SO going to that!
orangerful: (Default)
Went to the DCSWCC meeting and got my copy of Dollhouse from Jeff. The lenticular letter inside is pretty cool and ridiculous at the same time. I've got #142.

If you click through to the rest of the photos, you'll see the Adam Baldwin autograph up close, my Buffy Season 8 Gelaskin on my iPhone (so sexy) and lots of other random swag that I took from the free table that was brought back from SDCC.

I really want to go next year! Jeff said he reserved his hotel in December, January at the latest. So I think Dragon*Con will be the test and if I survive that, and feel like I can take it to the next level of crazy, I'll try go get passes to Comic Con 2010.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly - I snagged some True Blood handouts (go to my flickr page and you will see). I think I can scan the one postcard to create a Tru Blood label for some SOBE bottles so we can haz props!
orangerful: (true blood Eric's smile // faeriesfolly)
[livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly will be happy to know that I did pick up some fangs tonight from Hot Topic. I haven't done the whole molding-to-my-teeth thing yet, probably try that tomorrow or Sunday. My one tooth is sorta crooked so I'm trying to figure out exactly how I'm going to get it on there. But now we can totally vamp it up at Dragon*Con - Merlotte's after dark ;-)

Today was looooooooong. Very slow at the library because I think everyone in Bel Air went to the beach. Seriously, every question I had yesterday was "what is a good beach read?" so I'm pretty sure all of our regulars were at the shore.

I have a bag full of stuff to talk about at the meeting tomorrow. My Star Wars club is meeting and the theme is one I suggested - what other stuff do we collect! Well, you know I have a LOT of other fandoms. I put a few of my more academic Whedonverse books into my bag, along with my little mini-slayer scythe. I also have a bunch of my Battlestar Galactica action figures. I put Abby Cadabby in there too, just for giggles. I'm hoping that other members of the group will participate and fill the time, but I wanted to be prepared. If they see I am prepared to babble on about my love for Joss, they might interject with their own stuff.

I watched the trailer for 'The Lovely Bones' and went and dug out my copy. I snagged a copy from the donations pile ages ago, back when the movie was first announced. But since the book did not have a due date, it just sat on my bookshelf. But I will make myself read it now because the trailer looked really good and I want to be able to compare/contrast with the book.

4 days until my Boston/Maine trip and 26 days until the Dragon*Con Road Trip!!!!!!!! Can't wait, I'm in need of some adventure.

Last Saturday was the DCSWCC November meeting which means time to customize. We took the Vader Helmet trick or treat pails and decorated them.

Amy and I went to the Midnight Madness toy release on Friday night at the Columbia Toys R Us. It was a total blast.

The trip started out with a good omen. We stopped to get some iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts and their cash register was jammed so they gave it to us for free! We got to the store around 10:30. My peeps from the DCSWCC were there, hanging out, waiting. (I believe Jay was podcasting live for Force.net). Members of the Old Line Garrison of the 501st and the Terrapin Base of the Rebel Legion were there in costume, distracting us as we waited outside. It was a gorgeous evening.

Anyway, I got a really good haul. Grabbed all the new Galactic Heroes (Slave Leia/R2-D2 w serving tray, Plo Koon/Captain Jag, Jar-Jar/Destroyer Droid, Shaak Ti/Magnaguard), 2 Galactic Heroes playsets (Jabba's palace and Assault on the Death Star), managed to find a Clone Wars Yoda, snagged the new Padme Evolutions, and gave in to temptation and bought the 40 pc. school supply set (though they cheated and counted each sticker, crayon, and pencil seperately...not really 40. Still worth it for the Yoda coin purse and Yoda notebook).

Total blast as always. Can't wait to see what sort of video Frank puts together for this one!

Here are a handful of photos I took. I look like a crazy fangirl but I was having a total blast. :)
orangerful: (star wars figures // spitefairy)
So, I wasn't sure if I was going to attend a Midnight Madness for the new line of Clone Wars figures...that is, until I found out there would be NEW Galactic Heroes. So, of course, now I must go. Not sure which Toys R Us it will be but the group is leaning towards Columbia. Apparently if you spend $30 (that's easy) you get a free holographic Grievous figure.

Hasbro has posted 2 pdf guides -- one for the July 26 release, and one as a Fall preview.

I managed to find the Hoth and Naboo TRU Exclusives today, plus the Mighty Muggs Indiana Jones (I passed on Mola Ram and the Sword guy...they were cool but unnecessary). I need to order the Cantina Band & Mos Eisley exclusive sets from Wal-Mart before they sell out! *sigh* I clearly suck at saving money. :\

The DC Metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club (DCSWCC) has a limited amount of Boba Fett pins for sale. Each pin is $10 and the proceeds will go to the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Program, whose mission is to prevent burns and improve the quality of life for young burn survivors and their families.

I recently got mine in the mail and it is really cool. The design is the Holiday Special Boba Fett, but you'll notice his jetpack has a little something extra. :)

Anyway, if you want to help raise money for a good cause, now is your chance. I believe there are only about 250 left out of the original 1000.

Please pass this one to any other Star Wars fans you might know. (grins at [livejournal.com profile] snarkel with her magical [livejournal.com profile] cj_rss powers).

Okay, we had to use Google Video because my Cribs episode clocked in at 12:45 and YouTubes only lets you upload 10 minute videos. So, hopefully this works!

Let me give you the low-down on what this is - my Star Wars Collecting Club (DCSWCC) has a guy who likes to make videos ala MTV Cribs. A member of the club gets profiled and they get to talk about their collection. He had done 3 before this one, all officers in the club and all dudes so he decided to change it up for number 4 and do a non-officer and a female - ME!

Again, sorry about the face-making. I had no idea. I also spaz out at the end when we decide to do a Spaceballs spoof and I go a teensy bit overboard. And make sure you watch the credits for the outtakes! Enjoy!

orangerful: (leia // orangerful)
I'm fighting with my DVD-ripper right now trying to create a version of Star Wars Cribs that I can upload. It was far less painful than I thought! I had no idea I make so many weird faces though. I thought it was just because I was on camera but AD said that it was normal. Ah well!

I got a Fireside Padme figure at the meeting today, pretty much the only 3 3/4" figure from the recent wave I wanted. I behaved myself and didn't purchase anything else. I was tempted.

Oh, and Frank showed us the trench run from Star Wars Revisited. OMG SO COOL!!! I'm downloading the entire DVD right now so I can watch it in all its glory. It sounds silly and nit-picky, but it's not just some nerdy fanboy wanking over this and that. He actually made some nice tweaks and additions. I was trying to leave when he started it up and I was like "whatever" but after watching a couple minutes I had to sit down and see the whole thing. Gorgeous seamless work. You can read a list of what changes were made on the site.

Okay, I'm going to go watch 'Hot Fuzz' and hope this Cribs thing works this time around. I will let you know once I have it uploaded. :)
orangerful: (one girl // orangerful)
I had a doctor's appointment today. Actually, it was a biopsy. I almost had a nervy b when we got there because they kept calling it "surgery" and that was freaking me out. I've never really been to a hospital. AD said I looked like I was ready to run out the door or burst into tears. Which I was. But it took more time to prep me for the procedure than it took for the actual procedure. I just don't like doctors (no offense [livejournal.com profile] maybemanda!). I tend to freak out in hospitals. So this has been a LOOONG day.

So, to ease my pain afterwards (all mental pain, nothing physical luckily) I bought myself a Titanium Black Viper Mark II and a Yoda Bobblehead at Target and then came home and downloaded a bunch of Rock Band songs.

The Yoda Bobblehead is great. I was thinking of putting him on my dashboard...but he's actually pretty big. I'm not sure how I would secure him to the dash. I may just take him to work with me and put him on my desk. Nothing like a bobbing Yoda head to cheer you up after random meetings haha.

Tomorrow is the DCSWCC meeting for March! I'm excited because my Cribs episode will premiere! I hope Frank had time to get it done. He said I talk too fast so he had problems editing ("I can only deal in 13ths of a second!"). As soon as I get it, I'll try to upload it to YouTube or some other streaming site so you can all watch and laugh. It should be pretty amusing.

And after playing 3 hours of Rock Band now I want to watch Almost Famous. Haven't seen it in forever! We're gonna pop up some of my birthday popcorn and watch that now.
orangerful: (I got some loot // spitefairy)
Well, I did not finish my Death Star today - big surprise. We are such a chatty group, we ended up babbling about all things geek related - from the recently leaked screener of 'Razor' (so good) to 'Dollhouse' and Kristen Bell's hotness. So, my Death Star is mostly a pile of papers right now. But never fear! I will not give up. I just need to cut out the doors and windows and glue them to the foam core, then figure out how the whole thing fits together. Easy as pie! (Did I mention this thing is HUGE? Like, 25" in diameter. Don't know where I will put it when I'm done, but I will finish it!)

I did get some cool stuff today though. I'm almost caught up on the Galactic Heroes lines - I got Han/Logray, AT-AT Driver/AT-AT Commander, Duros/Garindan, and Imperial Officer/Death Star Trooper. (Oh, and yesterday when we went out to buy the foam core for the Death Star, I also found Luke & Yoda/Spirit of Obi Wan (which may be the CUTEST GH EVAR!) and Camo-Leia/Rebel Trooper!)

I also got this cool diorama/display thing! Originally from the UK and retailing for $70, I got mine for about...$12. But it's very spiffy. And it came with 50 figure stands! That's worth it right there haha. I've got it out of the box but I'm not sure if I want to keep the current figures on there that I had on the shelf before. I might do some fiddling. Then I'll post pics.

Also picked up some Star Wars playing cards! Heroes & Villians deck and Poster playing cards. Double deck solitaire will never be the same again!

Still no word on when the BSG figures are shipping...if I don't hear anything by tomorrow, I might shoot Time & Space Toys an email to check up on them. I did renew my Buffy Collector's Club membership and used the gift certificate to sign up for the Angel comics.

*sigh* this whole not spending money to recover from Bermuda is HARD! January, in January I'll stop spending money on random things...

...unless Santa forgets something, but then it's not really my fault is it!

So, in our Star Wars club, our video guru has made 3 episodes of 'Star Wars Cribs'. They are tours of our members collections and interviews with them about their Star Wars fandom and passion. So far, it's been all guys, and they all happen to be officers in the club.

But guess what? StarWarsDaddy just aked me if I wanted to be the star of the next 'Star Wars Cribs'!!!!

I'm far too excited about this. But it will be so fun! I said we should create a handout for everyone and see how many alternate fandoms they can spot during the program since my collection is scattered around the apartment and it's hard to look at a Star Wars figure and not see some other character from another tv show or movie floating nearby.

That or we joked about blurring out the other fandoms, and putting a disclaimer that StarWarsDaddy does not endorse or condone the use of other fandoms LOL!

[livejournal.com profile] jimithingy is already rolling his eyes at me over it, but he has to be here! They always talk to the significant other for some part of the show. Usually the sig. other rolls their eyes and talks about how "well at least it's not drugs or drinking". [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy could turn the stereotype around and talk about how I'm such a cheap date! most girls want diamonds, I just want a special edition SDCC holographic Princess Leia!

Anyhoo, don't know when this will actually happen. But when it does, I'll see if I can convince StarWarsDaddy to post the video on YouTube or something so I can share it with you all! (unless I make a total ass out of myself, in which case, you never saw this post)
orangerful: (white and nerdy // orangerful)
Just got back from another fantastic Summer Social with the DCSWCC (that's D.C. and metro area Star Wars Collecting Club)! Beautiful day today, just the right temperature and a bit of a breeze. Everything went smoothly. I had a yummy burger and hot dog and got to chat with all my Star Wars buddies. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy came with me so I got to show him off. :D I wore my "White and Nerdy" t-shirt, which was a big hit with everyone! AND managed to get some toys that I did not already have in the Sarlaac Swap and member raffle (my bag got an honorable mention!) -- I got the comic book set with Obi & a shock trooper and the one with Quinlan-Vos and some EU guy I did not know, and the ESB commemorative tin figure set (though I will probably ditch the figures as they are repacks, but the tin is pretty cool!). And, of course, a new club patch, cardback, and badge for my lanyard! All in all, a very good day, full of great people and good times. And the hour+ drive out to middle-of-nowhere Maryland was actually really nice!

And I just pre-ordered the BSG Chief Tyrol figure from Time & Space Toys so I'm getting him for sure! I did the whole $100 gift certificate + free toys route - bonus was they are having a free shipping and 10% off in stock sale this weekend - so I bought one in stock item ("Hush" Gentlemen minimates to terrorize my other buffy minis), then I got 10% off that, and then I was able to pick 3 free buffy figures! I'm going to save that gift certificate for the next wave of BSG figures or minimates.
